Camping in WoW Forever

A fire, three friends and one minute sitting down: that's a free hour of buffs. Best deal in Azeroth, and I've seen a lot of deals.

How a campfire works

  1. Learn Cooking. Any Cooking trainer, no level needed. The recipe comes with Cooking 1.
  2. Buy the materials. 1 Simple Wood (used up) and Flint and Tinder (a tool: it stays in your bags). The Cooking trainer and general goods vendors sell them.
  3. Craft the kit in the Cooking window. Kits go in your bags: craft a few ahead, trade or give them.
  4. Place it. Use the kit and target the ground (10-second cast). Outdoors only: not in cities, dungeons or raids, not in combat, and not too close to another camp. Kits share a 5-minute cooldown.
  5. Add camp items. Each player places one item from their own profession (10-second cast, used up). Placing one puts all your camp items on a 1-hour cooldown.
  6. Sit about 1 minute near the fire (/sit, a chair, lying down…). Crafting nearby also counts. Since 24 Sep you can cast, buff and craft without losing the timer.
  7. Get the buff. Every item's effect merges into one Camp Benefits buff for 1 hour. Anyone can use the camp: no group or profession needed.

Placed alone, without camp items, the fire gives no buff according to one guide; whether a bare fire gives rested XP, sources disagree. The fire also burns players who stand in it (no damage below level 5).

The three campfire kits

  • : holds 3 camp items. Simple Wood. Learned and used at Cooking 1.
  • : holds 5 camp items. Star Wood. Blueprint learned at Cooking 90, from Lord Serpentis in Wailing Caverns (one guide also lists The Deadmines); kit used at Cooking 140.
  • : holds 10 camp items. Thick Logs. Blueprint learned at Cooking 200 (where it drops: not known yet); kit used at Cooking 220.

The blueprint is learned at 90 or 200 but the kit is used at 140 or 220. One guide thinks this order is a beta bug. Every campfire also works as a cooking fire.

Camp items by profession

Tier 1 comes from the trainer. Tier 2 blueprints drop from dungeon bosses (some are also sold by a vendor); tier 3 blueprints are not found yet. A crafting station unlocks recipes you can only make next to it.

What a camp station is

  • Each profession has camp items in three tiers. Tier 1 gives a buff. Tier 2 (skill 140) and tier 3 (skill 300) often turn into crafting stations: some recipes can only be made next to them.
  • A station must be placed next to a campfire. Most of them replace the tier-1 item of the same profession and keep its buff (the keeps the Camp Tent's rested XP, the keeps the Faction Banner's Spirit).
  • Every camp item shares one 1-hour cooldown, and a placed item is used up. Build costs are listed for each station below.
  • During the beta, professions stop at 225: only the , , and part of the recipes are usable for now.

Where the blueprints come from

  • Tier 2: dropped by dungeon bosses (rare drops in The Deadmines, Wailing Caverns and Shadowfang Keep; more common in the Excavation Site: Wetlands and the City of Dalaran). One beta guide also reports Happy Camper, a vendor just outside Ironforge (Dun Morogh 51.6, 40.0), selling every tier-2 blueprint for 15 silver, to both factions: to verify in game.
  • Tier 3 and the : not found yet.
  • Blueprints and finished station items can be traded and sold at the auction house.

Pristine Leather

  • About 21 recipes and 7 recipes need Pristine Leather, a scarce skinning drop.
  • One beta report says it only drops for skinners of level 25 or lower, from beasts of level 10 to 25 outside starting zones. The Legacy perk Bountiful Harvest raises the chance. To verify in game.

"Rare leather, rare cloth, rare profit. Skin early, friend: the window closes at 25."

Camping and XP

  • The Leatherworking (and its upgrades, the and the ) is the only camp item that gives XP: it tops your rested XP up to 5% of a level for everyone sitting nearby. Nothing happens if you already have more.
  • After the top-up you get Boosted Rest: no new top-up for 1 hour.
  • Quest-giver campfires always give the same rested top-up. The level-5 quest "The Great Outdoors" sends you to one.
  • Every other camp item gives stats or utility, not XP.

All the other XP bonuses (food, sleeping bag, rested, dungeons) and how to chain them: Every XP bonus in WoW Forever.

Tier-1 buffs up to level 30

Values grow with your level. Above level 30: not known yet — the beta stops at level 30.

Camp buffs are a little weaker than the class buff they copy, and the class buff replaces them.

Good to know

  • A tier-2 or tier-3 item can be placed over its tier-1 item: it replaces it without using a new slot.
  • Blueprints and camp items can be traded and sold at the Auction House.
  • Legacy perks (account-wide, not the Skinning camp item of the same name): Field Guide shortens the camp item cooldown, Permanence makes camp buffs last longer, Reagent Economy makes tier-1 items free.

"Three professions, one fire, three free buffs. Bring a leatherworker and the fire pays you XP. Everything else is just sitting around — profitably."

FAQ

What does the Tanning Rack do in WoW Forever?
It is a Leatherworking camp station (skill 140). Placed next to a campfire, it lets you craft the recipes that need it, about 48 at the moment, and it keeps the Camp Tent's rested XP benefit for everyone nearby.
Where do I get the Tanning Rack blueprint?
It drops rarely from Razorclaw the Butcher in Shadowfang Keep. One beta guide also reports a vendor called Happy Camper just outside Ironforge selling the tier-2 blueprints for 15 silver: to verify in game.
What does the Spinning Wheel do?
It is the Tailoring camp station (skill 140). It unlocks about 74 Tailoring recipes and keeps the Faction Banner's Spirit buff. Its blueprint drops from the Unstable Sentinel in the City of Dalaran.
Do I need the profession to use a station?
To place it, yes: the matching profession at the item's skill. A friend with the skill can place one at your camp; you then craft beside it if you have the recipe.
