At a glance

Druid-infested caves under the Barrens: 8 bosses, a maze of ledges and an escort at the end. Bring someone who can deal with sleep.

Snakes, twisted druids and a cave that never stops moaning. Mind the ledges, kid, and keep your coin purse closed.

Who it's for

  • Horde players: all seven dungeon quests, including the two Horde-only ones from Thunder Bluff.
  • Alliance players: five quests, which one source lists as open to both factions (to verify). The Glowing Shard ends in Darnassus for the Alliance.
  • Getting there: easy for the Horde; a long trip for the Alliance (one source).

The route, in plain words

  1. The entrance. A cave opening in the Barrens, then the portal inside the big cavern.
  2. The maze. Ledges and tunnels, with a few jumps. The four Fang lords (Anacondra, Cobrahn, Pythas, Serpentis), plus Kresh and Skum.
  3. Verdan. Near the waterfall, after Serpentis.
  4. The escort. With the four Fang lords dead, talk to the Disciple of Naralex and escort him to the ritual stone. Mutanus comes out in the pool.

The sources list the bosses in different orders. Only two points agree: Verdan comes after Serpentis, and Mutanus is last. We check the order in game at launch.

The bosses in one line each

  • Lady Anacondra: interrupt or control her Sleep. She spawns in one of four random spots (one source).
  • Kresh: a turtle with high armor in the stream: armor reduction helps, casters have it easier.
  • Lord Cobrahn: kill his three Deviate Pythons first and interrupt his casts. He turns into a snake late in the fight and hits harder.
  • Deviate Faerie Dragon (rare): doesn't always spawn. A simple damage race.
  • Lord Pythas: interrupt his Sleep first. Non-melee stay away from his Thunder Clap.
  • Skum: tank and spank. Spread out for his Chained Bolt, which can be interrupted.
  • Lord Serpentis: no adds. Keep him interrupted.
  • Verdan the Everliving: his Grasping Vines root targets within 10 yards. Ranged and healers stay back. Sources disagree on whether the vines also knock back or stun (to verify).
  • Mutanus the Devourer: add waves come first (sources disagree on how many). Then a group fear, an interruptible sleep and an area hit: save your cooldowns.

Quests to grab before you go

Take these before entering, or you'll run it twice:

  • Hidden cave above the entrance: Deviate Hides (Nalpak) and Deviate Eradication (Ebru). The hides can take several runs.
  • Ratchet: Smart Drinks (Mebok Mizzyrix; needs Raptor Horns done first) and Trouble at the Docks (Crane Operator Bigglefuzz). Mad Magglish, the target of the second one, is a stealthed mob in the cave outside.
  • Thunder Bluff, Horde only: Serpentbloom (Apothecary Zamah) and Leaders of the Fang (Nara Wildmane), which asks for the four Fang lords. Leaders of the Fang ends a chain; sources disagree on how long it is (to verify).
  • Mutanus drops the Glowing Shard. It starts The Glowing Shard, which ends in Thunder Bluff (Horde) or Darnassus (Alliance). Sources disagree on the steps in between (to verify).

Watch out

  • Druids of the Fang can put you to sleep for up to 15 seconds: interrupt Slumber first (one source).
  • Deviate Guardians call for help (one source).
  • The maze has ledges and a few jumps (one source).
  • Experience: in the beta, most dungeon experience comes from quest turn-ins; kill experience was raised by about 20% on Oct 8.

FAQ

Where is the Wailing Caverns entrance in WoW Forever?
In the central Barrens, in the Lushwater Oasis area south of the Crossroads. The cave opening is at 46.0, 36.3; the dungeon portal is inside the big cavern beyond it.
What level should you be for the Wailing Caverns?
Sources from the beta disagree on the lower bound (15-24 or 17-24). One source gives entry from level 10 and the Group Finder from level 17. We confirm the range in game at launch.
Can the Alliance run the Wailing Caverns?
Yes. Two quests are Horde-only, and one source lists the other five as open to both factions (to verify). The trip is long for the Alliance: boat from Booty Bay or south from Ashenvale (one source).
What is the last boss of the Wailing Caverns?
Mutanus the Devourer. He only appears after the four Fang lords are dead and you escort the Disciple of Naralex to the ritual stone.
