The four real XP boosters

  1. Rested XP: doubles the XP from kills while your rested pool lasts (quest turn-ins don't use it). Get it by logging out in an inn, a capital city or your Cozy Sleeping Bag.
  2. Well Fed food: +5% XP from kills, on top of the food's stat buff, for 15 minutes (feasts: 45). Eat any cooked XP food, seated, for 10 seconds. The first XP foods need only Cooking 1.
  3. Cozy Sleeping Bag: +1% XP per minute lying in it, up to +3%. Survives death, 1-hour cooldown. From a 6-quest chain at level 14 (full guide).
  4. Camp Tent: tops your rested XP up to 5% of a level (nothing if you already have more). Sit about 1 minute at a campfire with a Leatherworking Camp Tent, or at any quest-giver campfire (how camping works).

Vendor food (Tough Jerky, bread and the like) heals only: no XP buff.

Rested XP

  • Builds in inns, capital cities and inside the Cozy Sleeping Bag, also while you are logged out there.
  • Rate and cap: 5% of a level per 8 hours, up to 150% of a level, according to one guide. To verify in game
  • Whether rest builds anywhere else is not clear: sources disagree.
  • Legacy perk Well Rested (5 ranks): +4% per rank to both the build-up speed and the cap (Legacy system).

Camp Tent and Boosted Rest

  • The Camp Tent is the only camp item that pays in XP. Every other camp item gives stats or utility.
  • After the top-up you get Boosted Rest: no new top-up for 1 hour.
  • At level 20, a 5% top-up is about 1,160 XP of rested pool; at level 30, about 2,370.
  • The level-5 quest "The Great Outdoors" walks you through it at an NPC's campfire.
  • Does a bare campfire, without a tent, give rest? Sources disagree. Bring a leatherworker.

Dungeons

  • Dungeon mobs give little XP, but dungeon quests pay a lot: do each one the first time you run the dungeon (dungeon quests first).
  • Since the 8 Oct beta update, dungeon mobs give about 20% more XP than before, and each player now gets XP for their own level, not the group's highest level.
  • Repeat clears only pay kill XP: quests are one-time (one guide).

Groups

  • Kill XP is split between group members; quest turn-in XP is not (one guide).
  • If one member is far above the mobs' level, nobody gets XP (one source). Group with players near your level.

The hourly routine

  1. Log off rested: inn, capital or sleeping bag.
  2. Start at a camp: sit 1 minute at a fire with a Camp Tent → rested top-up, plus the stat buffs of the other camp items for 1 hour.
  3. Unroll the sleeping bag at the same camp: 3 minutes → +3%.
  4. Eat XP food: +5% kill XP for 15 minutes (30 with the Legacy perk Gourmand 3/3).
  5. Spend rested on kills, not on turn-ins: a level-matched dungeon group is the best place.
  6. Repeat every hour: tent and bag are on 1-hour timers, food on 15 minutes.

Good to know

  • How the bonuses combine (added or multiplied), and whether +5% and +3% apply to the rested double, is not published anywhere. To verify in game
  • Sleeping bag buff: 1 hour or 2 hours, kill XP only or all XP? Sources disagree.
  • No character boosts or WoW Token planned for launch. XP potions, heirlooms and Recruit-A-Friend XP: no source yet.
  • Gathering and crafting give no character XP, according to one guide: professions help through food and the Camp Tent.
  • Above level 30 nothing is known yet: the beta stops at level 30.

"Rested is the gold bar, food and bag are the loose change. A real goblin pockets all three. Now go — every minute reading is a minute not killing."
