Key

Crescent Key (from Pusillin, Dire Maul East).

Classic data, to verify

Ogres, a king, and a chest that pays best when you leave the guards breathing. Goblin rule number one: not everyone needs killing. Just the one with the crown.

Classic data — updated at Forever's launch

Dire Maul North is not playable in the beta (level cap 30). The description below follows the original game's version of this dungeon; we check each point in game at launch and update this page.

Who it's for

  • Level range: sources disagree (56-60 or 60).
  • Both factions: no faction-only quest is listed. Nearest hubs (one source): Camp Mojache for the Horde, Feathermoon Stronghold for the Alliance.
  • Group: 5 players.

The route, in plain words

In the original game:

  1. The way in. Southern gate of the compound into Eldreth Row, through Broken Commons, then the north door. The Crescent Key (from Dire Maul East), lockpicking 300 or a Seaforium charge opens it.
  2. Guard Mol'dar drops the Inner Door Key. A lower door near him leads to the Athenaeum in Dire Maul West.
  3. Stomper Kreeg, Guard Fengus (his chest holds the Courtyard Key) and Guard Slip'kik.
  4. Captain Kromcrush, then Cho'Rush the Observer and King Gordok.

The tribute run (original rules):

  • Kill only King Gordok. Keep Mol'dar, Fengus, Slip'kik and Kromcrush alive (one source adds Kreeg).
  • Slip'kik: repair the Broken Ice Trap with Frost Oil and a Thorium Widget while he is away, and it freezes him.
  • Kromcrush: wear the Gordok Ogre Suit and he steps aside.
  • Cho'Rush: leaving him alive improves the tribute chest.
  • The buffs (2 hours, lost on death): Mol'dar's Moxie (+15% Stamina), Fengus' Ferocity (+200 Attack Power), Slip'kik's Savvy (+3% spell crit).
  • After the run, Kreeg becomes a drinks vendor.

The bosses in one line each

  • Guard Mol'dar: Knock Away, Shield Bash, Shield Charge; Enrage and mastiffs around 40-50%.
  • Stomper Kreeg: Booze Spit (a cone that makes you drunk), War Stomp, Whirlwind, Drunken Rage.
  • Guard Fengus: the same kit as Mol'dar.
  • Guard Slip'kik: the same kit too.
  • Captain Kromcrush: Mortal Cleave and Mortal Strike (reduced healing), a fear shout, Retaliation, and Call Reavers (at 50% or 75%, sources disagree).
  • Cho'Rush the Observer: a random caster kit (priest, shaman or mage) and he heals the King; kill him first on a normal clear.
  • King Gordok: Berserker Charge, Mortal Strike, Sunder Armor, War Stomp.

Quests to grab before you go

Original-game list; levels and rewards still to check:

  • A Broken Trap: from the Broken Trap itself. Bring Frost Oil and a Thorium Widget.
  • The Gordok Ogre Suit (level 56 per one guide): from Knot Thimblejack. 8 Rugged Leather, 4 Bolt of Runecloth, 2 Rune Thread and 1 Ogre Tannin (in a basket above Knot). Reward: the suit and 100 Steamwheedle reputation.
  • Free Knot! (56): from Knot Thimblejack. Bring the Gordok Shackle Key. Reward: Knot Thimblejack's Cache.
  • Unfinished Gordok Business (56 per one guide): from Captain Kromcrush, after the King of the Gordok step. Fetch the Gauntlet of Gordok Might from the chest behind Prince Tortheldrin in Dire Maul West. Choice of four class glove sets.
  • The Gordok Taste Test: from Stomper Kreeg after the tribute run (one source).

Watch out

  • Quest order: one source says finishing Free Knot! before the suit quest takes the suit away.
  • Cho'Rush: killing him before the King downgrades the tribute chest (one source).
  • Ogre Tannin is soulbound per a player comment: the crafter must loot it.
  • Quest bugs: player comments report an "already completed" bug on Unfinished Gordok Business (unverified).
  • Loot: Forever reworked dungeon loot in general (one source). No source ranks any item here as best-in-slot.

FAQ

What is the Dire Maul North tribute run?
In Classic, you kill only King Gordok and keep the guards and Captain Kromcrush alive. The chest that appears after the King dies holds one item per spared guard or boss, and the survivors give 2-hour buffs. Classic data, to verify in Forever.
What level should you be for Dire Maul North?
Sources disagree: 56-60 or 60. One source gives Group Finder access at level 54; another says the wing is built for 60.
Where is the Dire Maul North entrance?
In Feralas. Sources give different coordinates (around 59, 45 for the southern gate of the compound, 64.9, 29.4, or 43.4, 66.5): we check in game at launch.
How do you get past Captain Kromcrush?
In Classic, wear the Gordok Ogre Suit from Knot Thimblejack's quest: Kromcrush steps aside for the wearer only, and the suit lasts ten minutes. To verify in Forever.
