Frost Mage rotation — WoW Forever

Last verified: 3 Nov 2026

Frostbolt pays the bills, friend, and Ice Lance is the tip. Freeze them first, cash in second, and never let them touch your robe.— Nix Goldgrin

Before the pull

  • Keep one armor up at all times. A mob that hits you can be slowed, and the October 15 notes say your armor can also trigger Frostbite and Fingers of Frost.

    One source
  • Replaces Frost Armor at 30: same effect, much more armor. Solo, this is your armor.

  • Not played yet — game files

In dungeons and long fights: half your mana regeneration keeps running while you cast.

    Guides agree
  • More mana. Cast it on yourself and your group.

Opener

  1. From max range: the first bolt slows the mob as it runs at you.
  2. A second bolt while it is still slowed.
  3. When it reaches you: it is frozen in place.
  4. Frozen target: big bonus damage. Then step back out of melee range and go back to Frostbolt.

Priority — one target

Each time you can act, press the first line that is ready.

Priority — packs

Packs are where a Frost Mage earns, friend, but they are also where a Frost Mage dies. Pull only what your Frost Nova can hold.

  • Freeze the whole pack around you, then step out of it.

    Guides agree
  • start the cast while they are frozen.

    Guides agree
  • finish with the cone as Flamestrike lands, or when they break free.

    Guides agree
  • spam it only when standing next to them is safe.

    Guides agree
  • Mostly in dungeons, when the tank holds the pack and going close is too risky. Use your highest rank: a rank learned more than 12 levels below you triggers Frostbite and Fingers of Frost less often (November 2 notes).

Too close or in trouble

  • A mob reaches you: freeze it. Then walk away before you cast, because damage can break the freeze.

  • 20 yards forward and out of stuns and roots. Use it, then turn and cast.

  • 40% slow on everything in front of you.

  • a second mob joins the fight? Sheep it, kill the first one.

    Guides agree
  • a caster is about to heal or nuke. Counter it.

  • Talent

10 sec of immunity when it goes wrong.

    Guides agree
  • Talent

Finishes the cooldown of your other Frost spells. A second Frost Nova or Ice Block when you need one.

Cooldowns

  • mana low and nothing hitting you

8 sec channel that refills your mana, 8 min cooldown. Out of danger only.

    keep it up

A shield, and no casting delay when you get hit. According to the November 2 notes, it also gives +15% Frost damage for 1 minute when cast, plus 5% more while the shield holds: recast it every minute.

  • before a long fight

one gem, one use. Make a new one before each boss.

Resource

  • — Drink between pulls. Conjure Water means you never pay for it.
  • — Frost Channeling (talent) makes your Frost spells 15% cheaper and lowers their threat.
  • Don't Blink or Mana Shield when you don't need to: both cost a lot of mana.

Nix's three mistakes

  • Ice Lance on a target that isn't frozen. That's paying full price for a coupon, friend: no bonus, and an 8 sec cooldown for nothing.
  • Frost Nova, then a Frostbolt from melee range. Damage can break the freeze. Walk away first, then cast. Distance is free.
  • A Fire Blast just before your Frost Nova. They share a cooldown now: your frozen target gets no Ice Lance. Bad timing is expensive, friend.
  • Pulling more than your Frost Nova can hold. Nix has buried braver mages for less.

What changes later

  • Level 35

Winter's Chill (talent, row 6): Frostbolt and empowered Ice Lance build up to 5 stacks, each one +20% to your next Cone of Cold, then Cone of Cold cashes them in. The priority line above appears from this level.

  • Level 40

Frostfire Bolt: 3 sec cast, a 40% slow and damage over 9 sec, counts as Frost and Fire. Whether it replaces Frostbolt as your filler is not known yet: we will play it after launch.

    To verify in game
  • Level 40

Blizzard wants Frost Mages to go deep in the tree for PvE (November 2 notes): Ice Barrier at the bottom of the tree is part of the plan.

  • Level 60

Level 60 order not played yet. The lines above use the game files of build 1.60.1.70707 and the November 2 notes; we update this page once we have played Frost at 60.

FAQ

What is the Frost Mage rotation in WoW Forever?
Frostbolt is your filler. Cast Ice Lance only on a frozen target or with Fingers of Frost active, use Frost Nova when a mob reaches you, Fire Blast while moving, and from level 35 cash in 5 stacks of Winter's Chill with Cone of Cold.
Does Ice Lance have a cooldown in WoW Forever?
Yes. Since the hotfix of October 28 (build 1.60.1.70685), Ice Lance has an 8 sec cooldown, and the November 2 notes make it shared with Fire Blast. It deals 300% bonus damage to frozen targets, so save it for them.
When does a Frost Mage get Ice Lance?
Ice Lance is a Frost talent on row 3: with all your points in Frost, you can take it at level 20 at the earliest.
