What a layer is

  • When many players are in the same area, the game runs several copies of the world, called layers. You only see the players, mobs and resource nodes of your own layer.
  • Layers open and close with the population: expect many of them on launch week.

What moves you to another layer

Reported by beta players; Blizzard has not published the rules.

  • Joining a group can move you to your friends' layer, or pull the whole group to yours.
  • Leaving a group moves you to another layer, and the group leader can be moved too.
  • Crossing a zone border can change your layer: two neighbouring zones can sit on different layers, and players fade in and out at the border.
  • A declined group invite has also moved players, according to one report.
  • A warning now appears before you are moved.

Keep your group together

  1. Group before you travel, not when you arrive.
  2. Invite before you pull. A layer change in the middle of a fight can drop your mob or your quest credit.
  3. Stay in the group until you're done: leaving and rejoining can split you again.
  4. Cross zone borders together, and regroup on the other side if someone vanishes.
  5. Camp buffs: stay the full minute at the fire. A layer change during that minute cancels the buff, according to one guide.

Good to know

  • General chat is split by layer too, which makes finding group members harder.
